The award was presented at a press conference at the Farrell’s Ice Cream in Buena Park California, commemorating the one year anniversary of a fatal accident that killed 73 year-old Marisa Malin and critically injured Marisa's granddaughter Isabel Manalo and two other children in the family. The tragic accident occurred when an elderly driver mistook the gas pedal for the break and plowed in to a bench located in front of the disabled parking space near the front door of the restaurant.
Fleming AND KRAMER said it took only a matter of days to install 12 safety barriers at this location, each costing about $500, which THEY called a “small price to pay.” FLEMING said, “In an area where it involves public safety, there is no compromise to me. It’s my mission now, for the rest of my life, to make sure that this doesn’t happen at any other business.”
Fleming IS ACTIVELY WORKING IN SUPPORT OF California State Assembly AB 764 INTRODUCED BY ASSEMBLYMAN BILL QUIRK (D-20TH) which encourages the inclusion of vehicle barriers in parking lots INTO NEW statewide codes. This bill is endorsed by the California Restaurant Association, largely because of this accident and because of the efforts Mike Fleming AND PAUL KRAMER.
